Acupuncture

Fine needles placed either along the channels of the body or in to specific muscles.

aka. "the one with the needles"

Acupuncture has both an Eastern heritage and a modernised Western approach, known as dry needling. We're trained in both.

What is Acupuncture?

Traditional Acupuncture is an ancient method of healing that encourages the body to promote its natural healing process. Very fine, disposable needles are inserted into specific acupuncture points along affected channels of energy in the body, known as meridians. These will stimulate the flow of energy, known as Qi.

However, there is a Westernised version of Acupuncture, known as dry needling. There is more of a medical understanding as well as application involved in this form. The needles are inserted to Trigger Points in the muscles, which were previously referred to as “knots”, to relieve pain and improve function.

Why you need Acupuncture Treatments?

Whilst sports massage is a fantastic form of soft tissue treatment, it unfortunately suffers from limitations due to the fact that thumbs and parts on the hand, that are used to perform treatment, are too broad.

When a trigger point is small and very specific, or is buried underneath several layers of muscle, a fine needle can be used to treat it easily.

Acupuncture has also shown to be effective in treating:

  • Insomnia, Anxiety, Tiredness, Depression, Headaches, Migraines
  • Aches and pains, Arthritis, Joint/back pain and weakness, Sporting injuries
  • Pregnancy Management – Tiredness, Nausea, Sciatica, Pubic Pain
  • PMS, Menstrual Problems, Menopausal Symptoms, Infertility

How Acupuncture Treatment works?

The fine acupuncture needles, when inserted in to the muscle, cause blood to pool around the needle allowing the contracted muscle to relax. This happens due to the rush of fresh blood to the area, which  also results in the dead cells being flushed away.

This is the more accepted understanding of acupuncture in today’s evidence-based world in comparison to its origins within Chinese Medicine, where it was believed to stimulate the flow of energy (known as Qi) to restore the bodies function and promote healing.
