How Nutrition can help increase immunity and fight winter illnesses.

Winter is the season when colds, flu and other illnesses seem to spread more easily. The colder temperatures and shorter daylight hours can weaken your immune system, making it more susceptible to infections. One of the best ways to prevent illness and stay healthy during these months is by nourishing your body with the right foods.

Here are some tips on how nutrition can support your health during the winter months and help keep you feeling your best.

    1. Boost your Vitamin C intake

Vitamin C is known for its immune boosting properties. It helps protect your cells and supports your immune cells to fight infections. When you're feeling run down or fighting off an illness, a diet rich in vitamin C can help support your immunity and reduce the severity of infections.

Good sources include: red peppers, kiwi, spinach, oranges and broccoli.

    2. Vital Vitamin D

During the winter months, many people have lower vitamin D levels due to reduced sunlight exposure. Vitamin D is essential for immune health, and deficiencies have been linked to an increased risk of infections. While sunlight is the most effective way to get vitamin D, there are foods that can help especially during these colder months.

Good sources include: Oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines), egg yolks, mushrooms and fortified dairy products.

    3. Zinc, an immune boosting hero

Zinc is a mineral that is often overlooked, however it plays a vital role in your immune health. It helps with the production of white blood cells, which are key in fighting infections.

Good sources include: pumpkin seeds, nuts, oysters, shellfish, beans and lentils.

    4. Incorporate anti-inflammatory foods

Chronic inflammation can weaken the immune system, so eating anti-inflammatory foods is key during the winter months. Try to make your meals as colourful as possible, to ensure you eat a wide variety of powerful antioxidants that help reduce inflammation.

Some of the best anti-inflammatory foods include: turmeric, ginger, kale, spinach, blueberries, nuts and dark chocolate.

    5. Gut health importance

A healthy gut is essential for strong immunity as approximately 70% of your immune system lives in your gut. Eating a diet that supports a healthy gut microbiome will help your immune system work more effectively.

Good sources include: yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, fruits, wholegrains, garlic and onions.

    6. Don’t forget to stay hydrated

During the winter months, we often forget to drink enough water. However, staying hydrated is vital for maintaining a healthy immune system. It helps the body flush out toxins, increases the efficiency of immune cells and ensures nutrients are transported throughout the body effectively.

    • Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you’re not thirsty.
    • Drink warm herbal teas (such as ginger, peppermint or chamomile.
    • Include comforting and nourishing warm broths.

Your diet has a powerful impact on your immune system and eating the right foods can make all the difference. By incorporating the immune strengthening tips shared, you can give your body the support it needs to stay strong and healthy throughout the year.
