When I transitioned into this industry from a background in beauty therapy, I’ll admit I was initially unaware of the full benefits that chiropractic and osteopathic treatments could offer - let alone the incredible results we can achieve for our patients by working together as a team. Witnessing their approach to treatment has inspired me to continually enhance my own techniques and expand my knowledge to provide even better care. Working alongside both chiropractors and osteopaths has given me invaluable insights into how different approaches to musculoskeletal care can complement one another.
One of the most important things I have realised is the need to look at the body as a whole, rather than just addressing isolated issues. This philosophy has reinforced my understanding that a client’s pain or discomfort often stems from something deeper or more widespread than they might think. For example, a tight hip might be linked to a spinal issue. Watching chiropractors and osteopaths assess the body from a functional perspective has helped me to consider how different parts of the body are interconnected.
Chiropractors and osteopaths often have a more detailed understanding of anatomy and biomechanics, which has helped me refine my communication with patients. Asking more targeted questions about medical history, posture, and how they move to get a clearer picture of what might be contributing to their issues.
While sports massage can address many issues, I’ve also learned the importance of knowing when to refer clients to a chiropractor or osteopath. There are times when a muscle strain is only a symptom of a deeper issue, such as a joint misalignment or nerve impingement. Working with chiropractors and osteopaths has taught me that referring a client to the right professional can be crucial in ensuring they get the most effective treatment for their specific condition.

The best results often come from a combination of treatments. I’ve seen firsthand how patients benefit from a multi-disciplinary approach. For example, after a spinal adjustment, i can help by working on muscle tightness and improving movement. Similarly, if they have worked on joint mobility, I can help keep the muscles relaxed allowing for better function in the long term. This collaborative approach has taught me that when we work together, we can provide more effective and lasting relief for patients.
Working alongside chiropractors and osteopaths has enriched my practice as a sports massage therapist in many ways. I’ve learned to appreciate the importance of a holistic, multi-disciplinary approach and how our therapies complement each other. It has reinforced the idea that a well rounded treatment plan, that combines different modalities, is often the most effective way to help patients achieve lasting health and well-being.
