The rotator cuff is a group of 4 small muscles and are each used in a variety of upper extremity movements. They are essential in almost every type of shoulder movement. Balanced strength and flexibility in each of the 4 muscles are vital to maintain functioning of the entire shoulder girdle. As a group, the rotator cuff muscles are responsible for stabilising the shoulder joint.

Rotator cuff injuries are a common type of shoulder injury. They arise from overuse or repetitive activities that strain the soft tissue and muscles around the shoulder joint. Symptoms can range from minor tenderness to intense pain and stiffness. There may be a decreased range of motion as well.

By targeting specific areas and using techniques such as soft tissue release, myofascial release and neuromuscular therapy, sports massage can help to relieve tension in the shoulder area and reduce the pain. Through the use of these techniques, it can improve joint mobility and range of motion around the affected area.If not managed properly, these injuries can be painful and lead to decreased mobility. Resting the affected area can help reduce inflammation and pain while giving the damaged tissue time to heal. You can try alternating ice and heat to reduce inflammation and increase blood flow to the area. Regularly stretching the muscles can improve circulation and decrease stiffness. A series of exercises designed specifically for the rotator cuff can help rebuild strength and flexibility in the area.
